Golden Jubilee Joy ...by Sr. Monika
There are no words that have not already been said about celebrating a golden jubilee. “How time flies!” “I can’t believe it’s been 50 years. . . ” “Where in the world does time go?” I just celebrated my Golden Jubilee as a Benedictine sister here at St. Placid Priory. I came right after high school graduation in 1971 and made first vows in 1974. My dad was 46 then. He’s 96 now.

Our community has had Associate members for many years. One of them has a sister who is a member of Madonna House in Canada. Madonna House was founded by Catherine de Hueck Doherty, whose writings we have used sometimes as readings in our chapel. Catherine was an inspired and inspiring woman, and her faith, work and heritage live on at Madonna House and in its members.

Community is a Verb ....by Sr. Monika
When I was vocation director many years back I wrote a little reflection on the topic of community. I called it, “Community is a Verb. ” I want to revisit that reflection. Community life is beautiful. Prayer calls us together three or four times a day.
Seeing Clearly ....by Sr. Dorothy
From the I Ching… It is only when we have the courage to face things exactly as they are, without any self-deception or illusion, that a light will develop out of events by which the path to success may be recognized. This could also perhaps be described as the path to knowing ourselves. Not an easy path.
Where is home?
Last August, I visited my family in Mexico City. I felt at home sleeping in my former bedroom with pink bedspread and pillows. I think my body remembered that bed because I slept so good there. This year I went to celebrate my mom’s birthday.
What Do You Do...?
“What do you do in the monastery?” This is a question we hear fairly often. And one answer might be the words attributed to St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words. ” The act of living in community can be a powerful illustration of people from different backgrounds living in peace together.
